About ECC "Bakhmat"

The Environmental and Cultural Center "Bakhmat" is a non-governmental organization located in Artemovsk, in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine. "Bakhmat" was organized in 1989 as a group, "To the Sources," and was registered in 1995 as a town public organization. There are 200 members and 45 active volunteers, mostly women and youth. In 1997, "Bakhmat" members were involved in creation of a regional office for a network of women's NGOs called "MAMA-86." The organizations work closely together on projects that involve the coordination of public participation to solve ecological and cultural problems.

Mission and Goals

The mission of "Bakhmat" is to encourage public participation in ecological and cultural issues, offer environmental activities for youth, promote and strengthen pride in local culture and environment, and assist developing nonprofit organizations.

"Bakhmat" works in the following program areas to accomplish its objectives: NGO development, environment, culture, youth, public participation to the decision making process. "Bakhmat" is a member of the coalitions "Alter-Eco", working group on climate change; and initiator of NGOs network on Ecotourism in Donbass.
