Sergio Vieira de Mello Prize was established in the year 2003.
The Prize is awarded for active involvement in peaceful coexistence and cooperation of communities, religions and denominations, and cultures.
The Prize is awarded in two categories: to persons, and to non-governmental organisations.
The Prize is awarded by the Panel of Judges composed of a representative of the President of the Republic of Poland; a representative of the Ambassador of the Federative Republic of Brazil to Poland; a representative of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees; representatives of Embassies and Consulates supporting the operation of the Villa Decius Association in matters related to human rights; a representative of the Institute of National Remembrance; a representative of the Commissioner for Civil Rights Protection; representatives of the founders of the Prize; Chairman of the ZNAK Foundation; Secretary of the Executive Board of the ZNAK Foundation; Chairman of the Villa Decius Association; and the Director of the Villa Decius Association. Invitations to work in the Prize\'s Panel of Judges are extended by the President of the Villa Decius Association.
The Prize was awarded for the first time on 30th September 2004 at Villa Decius during the Rebuilding Peace in Post-conflict Communities. Role of Media and Civil Organisations international conference.
