The Paraskoveyevka Special Boarding School for mentally disabled children is located in Paraskoveyevka village, 5 kilometres away from Artemovsk, Donetsk region, south-eastern Ukraine. There are 154 children in the boarding school aged between 8-16 years old, among them 15 orphans. Most children stem from rural areas and from families with a very poor economical background and alcohol problems, from the street, with parents whose parental rights have been taken away. Most of them do not have any mental disability, but learning difficulties and a slow physiological and psychical development.

The aim of the project is to help children to be better prepared for ‘after-school’ life through social adaptation and professional training in agriculture.

The objectives are:

  • to train children with agricultural skills in order to have better employment opportunities after leaving the boarding school
  • to improve living conditions/make them more home-like for social adaptation and learning domestic skills
  • to develop social skills of children and improve free-time opportunities through activities with local volunteers
