This we have tried to figure out during short training for mentors of EVS volunteers, which was organized in the framework of "Creation of Coordinating Centers on Volunteering" project with support of Zukunftsfonds Berlin. The training had very practical point - new EVS volunteers start their projects in SVIT in October. So together we have tried to figure out, who is mentor and why it is needed for a long-term volunteer, as European Voluntary Service. What are the tasks and responsibilities of mentor, what is his\her place in the project with the volunteer, and of course special needs and support of EVS volunteers. Details...

More than 35 participants from Lviv to Lugansk, Kherson to Kyiv met in Kharkiv on October 12th for some strange kind of Oktoberfest - not for beers, but to talk about volunteering. Open space gave opportunity for everyone to talk about volunteering under different sauce - what you prefer more. Some examples of such sauce: environment, activities with children, human rights and combating racism and xenophobia, how I spend my (volunteer) summer, ideas for short-term volunteer workcamps, networking and cooperation. From the 27th of July to 12th of August a group of 10 international volunteers came to Ukraine in order to organize activities for the handicapped people coming to Raduga rehabilitation centre in Donetsk.
Due to heavy rain and long trips, wet and tired participants arrived to Raduga center. After the participants changed into dry clothes and got a good nights sleep both the weather and the energy in the group got better as the workcamp continued. The first week of the camp the center was closed for renovation and no handicapped people came to the centre. This gave the volunteers plenty of time to get to know each other, brainstorm and plan activities for the following week and learn about SCI and conflict resolution. Details...

Autumn is traditionally time for summing up, collecting harvest and celebrating successful year. IVO “SVIT-Ukraine” is also collecting harvest and summing up results of the year of volunteering: international summer projects in Ukraine took place, several projects with long-term volunteers; Ukrainian young people attended international volunteer projects in different countries of Europe. And missing a warmer jacket – this was one of the points of recent PMT meeting of SVIT, which took place in Kharkiv on September 13th. Tea and coffee was helpful for warming up, as well as vivid discussions about past summer projects, upcoming events, ideas and proposals for the future, Dobre razom 2 and film on life of foreigners in Ukraine, planning Oktoberfest, starting projects with EVS volunteers and necessary preparation, activities on historic Jewish cemetery in Chernovtsy – completed and for the future, new partners in different regions of Ukraine, developing web-site as info resource on volunteering in Ukraine, PEACE seminar, and main big question mark – what will happen with YTNF 2. In the city of Kharkov, Ukraine, 10 volunteers representing 8 countries met for Dobre Razom 2 workcamp presented by SVIT Ukraine (www.svit-ukraine.org). This project was a sequel to Dobre Razom, a project which taught the negative effects of stereotypes and how to overcome them to school children in Lvov and Kharkov, Ukraine. The goal for this year’s project was much different yet very simple. With one professional camera, 10 active volunteers with the help of countless people from Kharkov would film material which would become a video to be shown all over Ukraine to reduce the level of racism and xenophobia. On August 20th, a group of 10 volunteers from Italy, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Belgium, USA and Ukraine met in Kharkiv, in order to continue our investigation on racism in Ukraine. The idea of the project was developed during international study visit “Dobre razom”, which took place in summer 2007 in Kharkiv, Lviv and Kyiv. This year, the goal for the project is to go deeper in the problem, research situation in detail and compare with other countries, think of possible solutions. As a result, participants will make a short film of educational/documentary character, on racism and xenophobia in Ukraine. Details...

During two weeks in August 2008, a group of twelve international volunteers and three to eleven local volunteers from Chernovtsy cleaned together the Jewish cemetery in ul. Zelena, Chernovtsy.
We worked all in all ten days from nine in the morning till two or three o ‘clock in the afternoon with around one hour lunch break.
The result of our work is a cleaned field section 33 and two rows of field section 34 that follows behind field section 33. The field section 33 is located behind the “ceremony hall” and the grave field of famous Jewish personalities of Chernovtsy.
We assume that we cleaned 2-3 % of the total area of the cemetery, a drop on the hot stone as the director of the Christian- Jewish cemetery said during a television interview. Details...

5 local volunteers from Chernovtsy have joined the international group to work on the historic Jewish cemetery, and more local young people phone and make inquiries as result of information in the media and public action, which was organized yesterday, August 12th, by the volunteers jointly with local NGOs. During the public action, international volunteers and activists of local NGOs "Dopomoga lyudam", "Narodna dopomoga" and "Union of active youth" have put up information tent at Sobornaya square in the central part of the town, and were distributing information flyers about the cemetery, talking to people and inviting more volunteers to join the cleanup.
