Towards the end of 2007, the YTNF steering group created two new funds (Category A: small-scale grassroot projects and Category B: promoting international cooperation among PMTs) & subsequently launched a first call for project applications. Altogether a total of 8 applications were received by the deadline. Of those submitted, 2 were approved for funding, 3 were rejected and a further 3 were given the opportunity to be revised and resubmitted by the end of December, taking into account the critical remarks of the Jury. It was on January 5th 1968 that the election of Alexander Dubcek heralded the dawn of the famous “Prague Spring”, when - in the face of Soviet tanks - thousands of Czech working class people took to the streets under banners demanding “socialism with a human face”…
Today, exactly 40 years on, looking at the global world around us, I begin to wonder if this slogan could be equally applied to the system that has since replaced socialism in virtually all former socialist countries of the world. Details...

Yesterday morning at 7 a.m. in the morning six german policemen entered the house of an aquaintance of mine. They spent one hour searching his room and his belongings and confiscated his computer and other things. The official reason? On his website he had a link to a group who advocates non-violent resistance to the atom lobby.
It is not hard to imagine what all his neighbours will think.
If you thought this kind of thing was only possible in CIS-countries, think otherwise. Since the new laws to limit civil liberties it seems no law-abiding citizen is safe in their own homes, also not in the EU. Details...

Buchenwald – Post description
Period: 01.09.2007 – 31.08.2008
The Buchenwald Memorial (former Nazi-concentration camp) has visitors from all over the world. They come in groups or as individuals and stay for some hours or for seminars. The volunteer will contribute with their own cultural background and individual personality to deeper knowledge and understanding of the past and of the present. The memorial is interested to host a further volunteer to promote the internationality of the place and specifically deal with documentation in Russian language, enquiries from CIS former prisoners or their relatives and CIS visitors to the centre. In this field, the intercultural exchange is very important. Details...

YTNF has reached its half-way stage - phew!
An appropriate time to pause for breath, evaluate what has happened (which is what the Steering Group will do at its upcoming meeting in Ukraine) and hopefully execute a good strategy and decisions for the remaining period.
Looking at the world around us, I have been struck in recent months by how little we come across the word "solidarity" in our media anymore. Instead, the focus is almost entirely on individual gain, making private profit & maximising the expolitation of human and natural resources in order to achieve that aim. What is more, governments and multis seem to be working hand-in-hand on this, disguised under the name "globalisation". Details...
