August 3-20, 2007 prepared by Natalie Dorosh and Victoria Kopchak In order to describe the sequence of the work camp it is necessary to pay attention to the determined elements of every short-term volunteer project, i.e. work, study, rest, evaluation and follow-up parts as well as to give a grasp of the group dynamics and peculiarities of conducting workshops in different camps. Work: The work elements of the Human Rights Traveler (HRT) consisted of two parts: creating a workshop plan and dividing responsibilities and conducting workshops at other work camps. During the preparation stage which took place during 2 days in Artemovsk volunteers chose the theme of the workshop, determined its aim and objectives and developed the workshop plan. Details...

During the week-end of July 28-29 some people came to Svyatogorsk not for pilgrimage at the monastery or walks in the forests, or swim in the river – but for a seminar. After lunch we occupied a pavilion at a children’s playground to discuss the YTNF project, practical aspects of international volunteer workcamps, which start in some days or some weeks, preparation to Euridea festival, project on Creation of Coordinating Centers on Volunteering, international festival “Discover, join and act!” and other issues. The program was compiled together at the beginning of the meeting, and we went through it, taking as much time as needed for discussions, questions and clarifications. Details...

This is about contact with our fellow-citizens :) Imagine our countries were alone on different islands of the same ocean but the only connection between them was our YTNF boat. The question is how to most effective create the opportunity to express themselves…This is how the idea of SOS Bottle appeared! Being alone on an island they follow the traditional procedure of sending SOS messages in a bottle, making therefore a call for rescue and help from distress… There are lots of us out here who struggle with our issues that are willing to listen, talk and offer encouragement and support to those who feel alone, people from our societies. Discussion on racism and xenophobia in Politcafe   A new discussion club - Politcafe was opened within the framework of the project “Workshop on Human Rights” on 19 March in the Youth Art Theatre in Ulan-Ude. According to Radjana Dugarova, a moderator of discussion, its goal is to provide all interested citizens with opportunity to talk openly about urgent issues of social, economic, political and cultural development of the Buryat republic and neighboring regions. The topic of discussion “Don’t want to wake up in a new Reich” was prompted by life. On 28 February a young Buryat man was murdered in Moscow by a group of neo-Nazi youth. Details...

Yesterday morning at 7 a.m. in the morning six german policemen entered the house of an aquaintance of mine. They spent one hour searching his room and his belongings and confiscated his computer and other things. The official reason? On his website he had a link to a group who advocates non-violent resistance to the atom lobby. It is not hard to imagine what all his neighbours will think. If you thought this kind of thing was only possible in CIS-countries, think otherwise. Since the new laws to limit civil liberties it seems no law-abiding citizen is safe in their own homes, also not in the EU. Details...
