Volunteers tackling gender problems

The aim of the project is to raise awareness and level of activism of young women in social and political processes in the community. For the 3rd time Berdyansk will welcome international volunteer project on the issue of gender and equality of women and men.

During the project a group of volunteers from Ukraine and international (SCI volunteers) will develop and organize series of educational sessions and seminars at local schools, colleges and university in order to inform young people on gender issues and roles of men and women in different societies and cultures. The workshops for students of colleges and universities will have stronger learning component. The project will start with training/seminar for the volunteers – preparation of workshops and materials for activities at schools and colleges. Interactive methods, such as simulation and role games, problem theater, debates will be used during the activities at schools and colleges. The international volunteers will be asked to prepare information from their countries.

The specific issues addressed during the project will be samples of discrimination of women and men, gender legislation in different countries and mechanisms of its implementation, equality in employment and career development, child rearing leave.

Another activity in the project framework will be round table meetings with representatives of public organizations, local authorities, active citizens in order to discuss gender situation, exchange experiences and brainstorm on possible solutions of problems.

Timeline: September 5-19. 2007

Day 1 – arrival, getting to know each other

Day 2 – seminar/training for workcamp participants, preparation of workshops for schoolchildren

Day 3,4 – workshops at schools

Day 5 – free

Day 6 – seminar/training for workcamp participants, preparation of workshops for students

Day 7-9 – workshops at colleges and universities

Day 10 – free

Day 11,12 – round table, meetings with NGOs

Other activities: excursions in Berdyansk and neighborhood, intercultural evenings.
