Cinema club “Forum”

Cinema club “Forum” Cinema club “Forum” opened in Ulan-Ude September, 20, 2008 on the premises of the Museum of Culture and Art of Buryatia. It was initiated by HR PMT as a discussion club for the youth of Ulan-Ude. The idea of project is to come together each Friday to see and discuss films devoted to the problems of contemporary society including the theme of Human Rights, as well as films of artistic value. To the first meeting mostly volunteers of SCG and their friends came to see short film collection “Ten minutes older.” The collection was released in 2002 as an experiment by famous film directors Chen Kaige, Victor Erise, Werner Hercog, Jim Jarmush, Aki Kaurismiaki, Spike Lee and Wim Wenders, each one of whom was to express in 10 minutes film his unique understanding of time. The second meeting of cinema club was devoted to the film “Ararat” by Canadian director Atom Egoyan about the genocide of Armenians that took place in the period of the World War I. The room was filled with people. Sedrak Ananikyan, chairman of the Centre for Armenian Culture in Buryatia invited as an expert told about the situation concerning the struggle of the Armenian people for the world recognition of the fact of genocide. At the third meeting the film “Square” was shown by Belarusian director Yury Khashchevatski about the political situation in Belarus. Experts at the meeting were representatives of HR movement “Erkhe” Radjana Dugarova and Dorj Tsybikdozhiev. After the film they told about dissolution of the Buryat-Mongolian republic and repressions of 1937 and invited all the present to commemoration action to remember victims of Stalinist repressions in Buryatia. Cinema club today numbers more than ten permanent members – old and new volunteers of SCG that became coordinators of the club. State newspaper “Buryatia” gives weekly announcements of the cinema club.
