Projects at the sites of former Nazi concentration camps From 05 - 26th August SCI Germany, in cooperation with SCG Russia and SCI Belarus, will organize in the frame of YTNF two projects in parallel at the remembrance sites of former Nazi terror.
Neuengamme, near Hamburg, with its 80 satellite camps, was the largest concentration camp in Northern Germany. Of the 100000 prisoners, mainly from Russia, Poland and France, around half died through physical exhaustion from work, disease and starvation. Georgsmarienhütte, near Osnabruck, was a Gestapo prison for 2000 prisoners. The prisoners were used to remove mines and debris after bombings, and also served as a deterrent for the 28000 foreign slave workers in the region.
Volunteers will be working to preserve or re-construct the former sites, as well as workiing in the archives (e.g. helping to translate interviews made with survivors). The aim of the projects is not only to remember and honour victims, but also to understand the reasons why the Nazis were able to take power in Germany and learn how to prevent it ever happening again.
Similar international projects run by SCI Germany will take place this Summer in Ravensbrück, Dachau, Wöbbelin, Zeithain and Braunschweig. Interested volunteers should contact their national SCI branch or else other voluntary service organisations cooperating with SCI.
